Find Kanawha County Traffic Tickets

Start with the paper citation itself. It tells you whether your Kanawha County traffic ticket belongs to state magistrate court or a city municipal court, and that single detail shapes everything else. The clerk who holds the file differs, and so do the search, payment, and hearing routes. A Kanawha County traffic ticket record can show the charge, the court date, later docket entries, and payment status, though the citation often lists the appearance date more clearly than any online source. Some charges allow payment without a hearing. Others require you to appear in person. Confirm every deadline with the issuing court, since options vary by court and by charge.

Kanawha County Traffic Court Records

State magistrate traffic cases can surface in MCRSearch, the public index for magistrate matters. For an exact match, use the Magistrate Court Payment System. It searches by Citation ID, Case ID, or Payment Plan ID. City tickets work differently. Each municipal court keeps its own docket and payment route. Nothing rolls them into one Kanawha County database.

What can a court record tell you? It may list the citation or case number, the charge, the issue date, the answer or appearance date, the court, later settings, the disposition, and any failure-to-appear or continuance note. A payment receipt is only one piece of the file. It does not settle the full disposition or account for every docket event.

Three Kanawha Citation Identifiers

The state payment search gives you three separate ways in. Match the label printed on your notice. A number typed into the wrong box will return nothing. Citation ID can be combined with the citation county. Case ID and Payment Plan ID each run their own exact-match searches. The official payment-search screen lays out all three choices.

Looking Up a Traffic Ticket

Start with the citation itself. Read the heading, seal, court name, and payment directions printed on it. State magistrate tickets follow the state routes. A city ordinance citation goes instead to Charleston, South Charleston, St. Albans, Dunbar, or Nitro. Whichever city is named controls. Never assume a city ticket landed in MCRSearch without proof it became a state case.

  1. Find the issuing court and citation number on the paper ticket.
  2. For magistrate court, try MCRSearch for the case index and the state payment system for an eligible balance.
  3. For municipal court, use the city's official page, phone number, counter, or linked payment provider.
  4. Compare the charge, court, number, and appearance date before acting.
  5. Call the court if the record is absent, the charge requires appearance, or the amount is unclear.

Need copies of a state magistrate file? Magistrate Clerk Allison E. Brown handles those questions at 304-357-0422 or at 111 Court Street, Charleston. City courts take their own calls. Charleston is 304-348-8079, South Charleston is 304-744-8321, St. Albans is 304-201-0132, Dunbar is 304-766-0208, and Nitro is 304-755-0701.

Kanawha Municipal Ticket Routes

Charleston offers an online docket and payment route. A citation can take up to ten business days to show up there. Sessions run Tuesday and Wednesday at 3 p.m., but the date on the citation controls. South Charleston works by phone, email, and counter only. It posts no public docket search.

St. Albans also routes questions through its office first. Dunbar publishes court instructions plus a payment link. Nitro sends payments through nCourt after adjudication. None of those payment pages counts as a full docket, though. For a required appearance, a continuance, or the current case setting, ask the local clerk. That office is the source that matters.

Finding Your Traffic Court Date

The appearance date printed on the citation comes first. A docket entry may later show a new setting or a continuance. Kanawha County publishes no single official daily traffic calendar, so verify the date with the issuing court before you rely on it.

Citation or case numberThe exact identifier, such as [citation ID as printed].
CourtMagistrate or the named municipal court.
Appearance dateThe answer or hearing date on the citation.
Start timeThe case-specific time or official session time.

Last checkedWhen the citation, portal, or clerk confirmed the setting.

Charleston calls its docket at the start of each session. Nitro begins court at 4 p.m. It stops answering phones after 3 p.m. on court days. Dunbar wants continuance requests at least ten days ahead with a valid reason. Charleston asks for a written request at least seven days ahead, plus good cause.

Kanawha Mandatory Appearances

Some tickets cannot simply be paid off. South Charleston's official page names the categories that require appearance. The list covers school-zone violations, reckless driving, leaving the scene, accident-related traffic offenses, driving on a suspended license, and other listed matters. Keep in mind that this list is a South Charleston rule. It is not a statewide classification.

Dunbar takes a similar line. It requires appearance on some charges, while allowing many nonmoving and minor moving citations to be handled before the date. Only the issuing court can say which rule fits your case. If the citation is unclear, call before paying. An online balance showing an amount due is not proof. The appearance requirement may still stand.

Key check: Confirm payment eligibility and appearance status with the court named on the citation. The local charge and court instructions control.

Pay or Contest a Ticket

Paying and contesting are two different choices. Payment generally accepts the court's disposition and amount. Contesting keeps the hearing route open, as long as you follow the citation and court rules. No online payment system makes that choice for you.

Magistrate forms include a Motion to Dismiss Traffic Citation, but the right filing depends on the case. The Judiciary forms page lists the options, and filings go to the proper clerk. Never send sensitive identifiers through an unofficial form.

Failure to appear: Missing a required date can trigger court action and a notice process affecting driving privileges under West Virginia law. Contact the court at once.

Kanawha Failure-to-Appear Process

West Virginia Code ยง62-4-17 covers failure to appear, payment-plan defaults, notice, late fees, and collection. It also covers notice to the Division of Motor Vehicles. Section 17B-3-3c governs suspension after court notice and the hearing framework that follows. Notice links the court record to DMV action. They remain separate files.

A failure-to-appear note on a Kanawha County docket means one thing: call the issuing court. Ask for the case status and the required next act. Keep proof of any payment, appearance, or release. The clerk can walk you through what the court record shows. But legal advice is not the clerk's job.

Traffic Court Record vs Driving Record

Two different offices keep two different records. The court docket for a traffic case sits with the clerk of the court that heard the citation, and that office tracks the case number, the charge, hearing settings, the plea, payments, and any orders issued. A driving record is something else entirely. It belongs to the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles and covers licensing matters that agency controls.

A court receipt is not a substitute for the Kanawha County court docket, and the court file is not a substitute for the DMV record. Each office keeps its own records. Ask the right one.

Copies and Fees

MCRSearch is only an index. For actual magistrate documents, you must go to the clerk. Magistrate Administrative Rule 11 sets photocopies at 25 cents per page, and the clerk can delay or deny a request that is unreasonably burdensome. Name the item you want when you ask. That could be the docket sheet, the citation, the disposition, or an order.

Kanawha County's CourtPLUS E-File service launched on April 1, 2024, though it exists for filing, not for searching traffic tickets. The official CourtPLUS status page lists that launch date.

Kanawha County traffic court record CourtPLUS status

That distinction matters: CourtPLUS is an attorney filing portal, not a public citation index for a Kanawha County traffic docket search.

Kanawha Citation Privacy

Kanawha Citation Privacy. A public traffic docket can carry case and charge data, yet some identifiers have no place in your notes. West Virginia Trial Court Rule 15A.24 bars full Social Security, taxpayer, license, passport, account, card, PIN, and password data from e-filed material unless required.

Keep your notes lean. The portal, the search type, the county, a public case anchor, the result count, and any follow-up needed will do. Skip birth dates and private addresses pulled from results. If a Kanawha citation is sealed or restricted, go through the clerk's lawful access route rather than a cached copy.

Payment Is Not Disposition

A receipt only proves the money moved. It says nothing about the court's final legal act. Hold onto it, then check the Kanawha magistrate or municipal docket for disposition and release entries. For a suspended-license matter, ask whether required notice went to the Division of Motor Vehicles.

Each Kanawha court sets its own payment steps. Charleston, South Charleston, and Dunbar publish distinct instructions. Nitro allows online payment only after adjudication. That mix is why a payment screen can never stand in for the issuing court's file.
