Kanawha County Court Calendars Explained
No single daily Kanawha County court calendar exists in official form. The county Judiciary page lists judges and office contacts, while WVPASS and MCRSearch open up case and docket data when it is public. Municipal courts post their own schedules and citation instructions. Every calendar entry is a dated setting attached to a court, judge, location, case number, and event type.
Jurisdiction comes first. Circuit and public family matters run through WVPASS. Magistrate cases use MCRSearch and the Magistrate Clerk. Charleston, South Charleston, St. Albans, Dunbar, and Nitro municipal cases stay with their own city courts. Federal settings live in PACER or CM/ECF. A payment portal can help you find a citation number, but it is no substitute for a hearing calendar.
Where Kanawha Dates Are Published
For state cases, the West Virginia court-record access hub is the official entry point. WVPASS needs a free account before you can reach circuit records. MCRSearch costs nothing. It runs behind a CAPTCHA and a disclaimer, and caps results at 30. Neither one promises a full countywide feed of daily settings.
| Matter | First source | Verification source |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit or public family | WVPASS case docket | Kanawha Circuit Clerk |
| Magistrate | MCRSearch case index | Kanawha Magistrate Clerk |
| Municipal | Citation and official city court page | Named municipal court office |
| Federal | PACER or CM/ECF docket | Southern District federal clerk |
When a portal shows no setting, the printed notice, scheduling order, or citation still matters. If the sources disagree, call the clerk for the court named on the newest signed paper.
Finding Your Court Date
Bring a case number if you have one. It cuts through common names and lets the clerk pull the right Kanawha County court date fast. Note where and when you checked, since a setting can move.
- Read the notice or citation for court level, case number, and city or county.
- Search WVPASS for circuit or family records, or MCRSearch for magistrate index information.
- Open the matching case and locate the next public event, not merely the filing date.
- For municipal court, follow the city page or call the city clerk because no shared municipal portal was found.
- Call the Circuit Clerk at 304-357-0440 or Magistrate Clerk at 304-357-0422 when an online date is absent or unclear.
- Check with counsel and the courtroom or clerk counter before appearing, especially after a requested continuance.
Both the Circuit and Magistrate Clerk offices sit at 111 Court Street in Charleston. If the public terminal or paper docket is your only route, the counter staff can help. WVPASS sends no alerts of any kind, so recheck yourself instead of waiting for a text or email the system never sends.
Kanawha Citation Dates Differ
Municipal session times are local habits, not countywide promises. The Charleston Municipal Court typically holds sessions Tuesday and Wednesday at 3 p.m. The docket is called at the start. For your specific case, the appearance date printed at the bottom front of the citation controls. Arrive late, the city warns. The judge may treat it as a failure to appear.
Nitro lists a 4 p.m. court start. It stops answering phones after 3 p.m. on court days. Dunbar says some charges require an appearance. Many nonmoving or minor moving citations can be resolved before the citation date. South Charleston posts a mandatory-appearance list covering school-zone violations, reckless driving, leaving the scene, accident-related traffic offenses, and suspended-license matters. These patterns help you plan a call. They never override the date on a current citation or notice.
How to Read a Court Setting
One setting line has several parts. Confirm each of them. A right date in the wrong court or courtroom can still mean a missed appearance, so read portal status alongside the newest order or notice.
| Date | The scheduled day for this event, which differs from filing and order dates. |
|---|---|
| Time | The session or individual start time; a docket call may begin before a case is reached. |
| Courtroom | The room and building for the named circuit, family, magistrate, or municipal court. |
| Judge | The judicial officer or division assigned when the public record displays it. |
| Setting type | Arraignment, pretrial, motion hearing, status conference, trial, review, or another exact label. |
| Status | Scheduled, continued, held, canceled, disposed, or the exact term shown by the court. |
Call a hearing virtual or in-person only when an official case source says so. An old setting is no basis for guessing at remote access. Write down when you last checked.
Kanawha Setting Terms in Plain Words
Docket terms name an event, not always its result. One case can show several settings as motions come in or the court shifts its schedule.
- Setting
- A scheduled court event with a date and purpose.
- Docket call
- A session in which the court calls listed cases, often before each matter is heard.
- Continuance
- A court-approved move from one date to a later date.
- Reset
- A new date placed on the docket after a prior setting changes.
- Disposition
- The recorded outcome of a case or charge, which is not itself a future hearing.
A continuance request on file is just a request. Until an order or notice sets a new date, treat the existing setting as live and keep showing up unless the court confirms otherwise.
Continuances, Resets, and Cancellations
A Kanawha County court date moves for many reasons: a judge grants a continuance, a conflict arises, service is incomplete, a motion needs a ruling, or the court adjusts its calendar. WVPASS sends no case-update notices. Check the docket by hand and ask the clerk or your lawyer whether a new order was entered.
City procedures differ. Charleston wants a written continuance request at least seven days before court, with good cause, following the documented routes on its official page. Dunbar asks for a valid request at least ten days ahead and allows one continuance per side for good cause. These rules are local only. They do not govern Circuit, Family, Magistrate, or any other municipal court.
When a setting vanishes, it could reflect a reset, a disposition, an access restriction, or a portal glitch. That alone proves nothing about cancellation. Confirm the event with the court that set it.
Kanawha Calendar Privacy Boundaries
Public access to court writings and records rests on Trial Court Rule 10.04, unless law or a limitation order restricts them. Rule 10.03 can limit access in civil matters. Sealed documents, juvenile cases, protected personal information, and some family or domestic-violence material stay closed even when related proceedings appear on a court calendar.
Missing is not canceled: A restricted setting may be omitted from public search even though the court and parties still have an active date.
Ask the clerk about the public status without seeking protected facts or participant details.
WVPASS launch material leaves out sealed and juvenile cases. MCRSearch works as an index only, so it will not hand you full case documents. When a Kanawha County docket search comes back blank, check the court level, the name spelling, the case number, and which office holds the file before assuming nothing exists.
Kanawha Court Date Quality Check
Write down where each court date came from before you drive anywhere. A quick note should capture the official URL or paper notice, the date and time you checked, the court level, the case number, the setting type, the judge, the building, the courtroom, and the current status. That record keeps a general weekly hearing pattern from being confused with a setting tied to one case.
- Match the court and county or city.
- Distinguish filing date from hearing date.
- Read the newest order after any continuance request.
- Confirm the building and courtroom, not just the judge.
- Recheck the source close to the setting.
Federal cases follow their own numbering, such as 2:26-cv-00554, and you run those through PACER or CM/ECF. A state case number will not work there. Match the tool to the number format first. The Kanawha County case lookup explains how to pair each search tool with the right case number.
If You Miss a Court Setting
Act fast if you miss a hearing. Call the clerk for the court listed on your notice. Talk to your lawyer if you have one. Ask specifically whether the judge entered a failure-to-appear notation, a capias, a warrant, a new date, bond action, or some other order. Paying online does not cure a missed appearance, so do not count on that.
Missed a setting? A failure to appear can have serious case, bond, or license consequences depending on the court and matter.
Call the originating clerk at once, obtain the current docket status, and follow the court's case-specific instructions.
A licensed attorney can advise how to respond to an order, warrant, or disputed notice.
West Virginia Code section 62-4-17 covers payment plans, failure-to-appear notice, fees, and collection steps in covered cases. A companion rule, section 17B-3-3C, deals with possible driver-privilege suspension after a failure to appear. Neither law makes a payment-system status proof that the court or the DMV has cleared the matter.
